Abstract

Abstract: 

Environmental activism has been a driving force in shaping U.S. environmental policy and public consciousness, particularly since the mid-20th century. This thesis will explore the historical trajectory of environmental activism from 1960 to 2020, focusing on its influence on policy development and its role in shaping public attitudes toward conservation, sustainability, and climate justice. By examining key movements, campaigns, and legislative milestones, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how activism has driven environmental change and influenced cultural perceptions of the environment. The study will also briefly consider the global context of U.S. environmental activism, acknowledging how international developments have influenced domestic movements and policies.

لقد كان النشاط البيئي قوة دافعة في تشكيل السياسات البيئية والوعي العام في الولايات المتحدة، لا سيما منذ منتصف القرن العشرين. تهدف هذه الرسالة إلى استكشاف المسار التاريخي للنشاط البيئي في الفترة الممتدة من عام 1960 إلى عام 2020، مع التركيز على تأثيره في تطوير السياسات ودوره في تشكيل المواقف العامة تجاه الحفاظ على البيئة، والاستدامة، والعدالة المناخية. ومن خلال دراسة الحركات البيئية الرئيسة، والحملات، والمعالم التشريعية البارزة، تسعى هذه الدراسة إلى تقديم فهم شامل لكيفية مساهمة النشاط البيئي في إحداث التغيير البيئي وتشكيل التصورات الثقافية المتعلقة بالبيئة. كما ستتناول الدراسة بإيجاز السياق العالمي للنشاط البيئي في الولايات المتحدة، مع الاعتراف بكيفية تأثير التطورات الدولية على الحركات والسياسات البيئية المحلية.

Le militantisme environnemental a été une force motrice dans l’élaboration de la politique environnementale des États-Unis et dans la sensibilisation du public, en particulier depuis le milieu du XXe siècle. Ce mémoire explorera l’évolution historique du militantisme environnemental de 1960 à 2020, en mettant l’accent sur son influence sur le développement des politiques et son rôle dans la formation des attitudes publiques à l’égard de la conservation, de la durabilité et de la justice climatique. En examinant les mouvements clés, les campagnes et les jalons législatifs, cette étude vise à offrir une compréhension globale de la manière dont le militantisme a impulsé le changement environnemental et influencé les perceptions culturelles de l’environnement. L’étude prendra également en compte, de manière succincte, le contexte mondial du militantisme environnemental aux États-Unis, en reconnaissant l’influence des développements internationaux sur les mouvements et politiques nationaux.
